What if today were your last day on earth?  Will you regret not making the time to do the things that are important to you?

Making time for the important things in life was Rick Mikkelson’s motto.  He had no idea his last day on earth would be in July 2017 yet he lived each day as if it could be his last, focusing on what mattered most to him.

He was a devoted father and husband and a loving son and brother.  He talked to everyone and was a stranger to no one.  If someone wronged him he sucked it up and moved on.  He didn’t know the meaning of holding a grudge.

When the kids were young, he quit his job to spend more time with his family.  When my work travels took me away from home, Rick was present, managing the household and supporting the kids in their activities.  As we transitioned to being empty nesters, Rick traveled to see me when I was temporarily assigned to work in San Francisco.

Family time was his priority and we were blessed to be able to take many trips to Hawaii, Florida and Mexico and shorter trips to Minnesota and the Dells.

Working less meant cutting back on some luxuries and Rick never complained about driving a 20 year old truck with no AC and a rope for a door handle.  He refused to invest in a new cover for the hot tub even though it was something he used everyday.   He cut back from golfing weekly to a few time a year.  Having time for family was more important than having money for things.

This website is dedicated to Rick’s memory.   I hope it will inspire others to live a life that is fulfilling and one that honors God.  The blog posts are about Rick’s life and about my family’s grief journey.  The rest of the site is evolving as the organization Make Them Yummy Meals becomes a reality.

It isn’t easy, learning to live my life without him by my side.  But he is in my heart and always reminding me to “Maketym”
